he has a laptop, so it probably uses SODIMM memoryĪ lot of people think that when a motherboard supports dual-channel it can only support 2 RAM stick overallīut motherboards can come with two dual-channels (which is why they have 4 slots), it can have 2 memory sticks in one dual-channel and 2 memory sticks in the other dual-channel But it would be better to buy 8GB DIMM to make all RAM dual-channel. Downside is that Skyrim lags like crazy when I'm on the main map.Originally posted by vadim:You don't need to replace it. It does all of that great, except I have to wait for the load times occasionally. But I only surf and play WoW and SC2 at medium-high setting. Now, I'll have to look into getting some sooner than I was planning I'm still only using 1 gig.

I didn't realize memory was that cheap, haven't looked since I built my wife and my pc last year. A pc now would barely function on 1 GB of ram if you do anything more than web browse or play bejeweled. Now, I'll have to look into getting some sooner than I was planning In my case, I will be looking into getting 16 GB, I can allocate 8+ to Tekkit server 4+ to my personal game running on it, and still have 4 for the OS, browsing, and whatever else I feel like, or any combination there of (if the builds get crazy and I need 12 for tekkit, put mine on 2, and still have 2 for the OS). Tekkit itself suggest AT LEAST 4GB to be reserved for it. it will kill the map (1 frame per 5 seconds) in that area. Ex: My 4 GB of OC'd ram, I have 3 allocated to the Tekkit server, 1 to my own instance of minecraft, and if we do any crazy building, say a 30 x 64 quarry leading back to a mild distribution/separation room. So, my advice for the op is if you plan to ever run your own minecraft server (even if it is for 1-4 of your close friends). I thought 4 was ok, until I started hosting my own Minecraft server. 16 Gigs of RAM? Did I fall asleep since 1-4 was the norm?yes. When it comes to multitasking, well the 16Gb will be future proof for the coming 3-4 years if your going multitasking. As you can see on the Benchmark, 8gb is as good as the 16gb on the 64bit client of Half Life 2 when tested, and on 32bit client games, theres no differents. 8Gb will ne enough.īut to answer your basic question, 16 Gb is overkill atm, 8Gb will be enough.

Other than that, 32bit client games wont use more than 2 GB, there is only few that can use up to 3-4 gb with large adress aware.

Also will you lose performance if you have 16GB and you aren't fully utilization it? Last thing will having 16GB 'future proof' your PC (I don't plan to upgrade for at least 2 years) or is there no foreseeable use for 16GB on the horizon? The only performance you will see is if the Game is a 64-bit client.

I play mostly games but I always have a few internet windows open on in the background along with email/Vent/Spotify/Skype. So soon I'm building a new computer and I'm wondering if I should stick with 8GB memory or up it too 16 GB (since memory if fairly cheap now).
